NFL preseason betting roundup

The NFL made its return on Sunday night, as the Washington Redskins rolled over the Indianapolis Colts 30-16 in the Hall of Fame Game. The Skins were a 4.5-point favorite in the game and easily covered the spread.

To be fair, it was really the Redskins' backups knocking off the Colts' backups as both sides barely let their starters see the field - and some didn't see the field at all.

For the Colts, the missing pieces included quarterback Peyton Manning, receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, defensive end Dwight Freeney, and safety Bob Sanders. For Washington running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts both stayed on the sidelines, while the defense was short a number of regulars.

With Manning out, Colts backup QB Jim Sorgi started, and in limited duty he completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for 66 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Quinn Grey came in and passed for 160 yards, with a TD to Onrea Jones, but he also fumbled in the end zone which led to a Washington safety. Colts running back Joseph Addai wasted his time even suiting up for the game, as he had only one carry for negative-four yards.

Redskins QB Jason Campbell was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 61 yards with a TD strike to Antwaan Randle El before taking a seat. Rookie QB Colt Brennan, who smashed college records at Hawaii before being drafted this year, saw a lot of action and completed 9-of-10 pass attempts for 123 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

With Portis and Betts both skipping the game third-string running back Marcus Mason had a busy night with 18 carries for 98 yards and a five-yard TD reception. The Redskins' defense also looked good in the win with three sacks and an interception returned for a TD to go along with the safety.

Looking ahead, on Thursday night there are five games on tap - including the debut of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants at Detroit, and the debut of the near-perfect New England Patriots at home versus Baltimore.

It's doubtful Eli Manning will play much on Thursday night, while Tom Brady and Randy Moss may end up playing only one series (if that) against the Ravens.

The rest of the Thursday night preseason schedule includes the Jets at Cleveland, Kansas City at Chicago, and New Orleans at Arizona. There could be at least a couple of quarterback battles in those games; Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens will fight it out for the Jets' starting gig, and Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton could both be considered for the Bears' starting job.
