Pure Clan rallies for American Oaks at Hollywood
Monday, Jul 7 2008

Pure Clan made a good late rally to win the $750,000 American Oaks (G1) on Saturday at Hollywood Park, one of five graded stakes on the star-studded card.

Bob Holthus trains the filly, a Kentucky mainstay, who won his first race in California.

Pure Clan is owned by IEAH Stables, Lewis Lakin and Pegasus Holding Group Stable, and was ridden to victory by Julien Leparoux, who has been on board the filly for five of her six career wins.

The winner stopped the timer in 2:00.50 for the 1 ΒΌ miles and paid $7.00 as the betting choice.

Satan's Circus, one of four European shippers, rallied to finish second, completing a $90.00 exacta.

Leparoux stalked the early pace down the backstretch while saving ground, angled out for the stretch drive and had to wait patiently for some running room, spurting clear after splitting rivals under left-handed whipping to prevail by three quarters of a length.

"I was a little worried turning for home if she was going to be able to get through, but she made it," Holthus said. "Julien did a great job. She always runs the last sixteenth of a mile as hard as she can. I felt pretty confident when I saw her head coming up through there. She's a very hard-running filly, she's very consistent and she never runs a bad one."

Pure Clan won her sixth race in nine career starts, and went over the $1 million mark in earnings with the victory.

Clearly Foxy rallied late at 18/1 to complete a $1 trifecta that returned $478.10. Caribbean Sunset, the most highly regarded of the four European shippers finished fourth.

Diamond Diva came out a nose in front to win a thriller in the $750,000 Cash Call Mile (G2), edging Ventura for the victory.

The filly had to steady in the early going, stalked the pace from the outside, lost the lead inside the final sixteenth of a mile and battled back to get the head bob under jockey David Flores.

"It was a very close call," Flores said. "I was just hoping coming back I'd see my number up. That other filly went by her in the stretch and my filly looked at her and said 'no way.' She came back real gamely."

The winner returned $6.60 for the win and earned $425,000.

Zenyatta ran her career record to a perfect 6 for 6 with a win in the $300,000 Vanity Handicap (G1). She prevailed by a half-length over Tough Tiz's Sis.

Street Boss completed the stakes action on Saturday with a win in the $300,000 Triple Bend Handicap (G1). Flores picked up his second stakes win on the day, coming with a five wide run to take over in the stretch and win by a half length over Elite Squadron.

The colt paid $3.40, with the $2 exacta returning $12.60.

Wire Job in U.N.: Precious Passion went coast to coast to win the $750,000 United Nations Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Monmouth Park, prevailing by a neck over Strike a Deal and paying $29.60 for the victory.

Eddie Castro doled out his speed and he held on to win the race and earned an automatic berth in the $3 million Breeders' Cup Turf, as the U.N. Stakes is part of the "Win and Your In" series of races.

Notional, winner of the $300,000 Salvatore Mile (G3) earned an automatic berth in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with his victory.
