Djokovic Edges Alcaraz for Gold Medal in Men’s Singles

Serbian Collects First Olympic Gold in Brilliant Career

Novak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon loss to Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday. In Olympic news, Djokovic wins Olympic gold in Paris with his straight-set win in the men’s singles final.

Alcaraz aimed to add an Olympic title to a summer that saw him earn Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The victory was anything but easy. Each set went to a tiebreak with Djokovic coming out on top over his much younger opponent. Djokovic is 37; Alcaraz is 21.

The first set went a stunning 94 minutes. The scores were 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2).

Djokovic wins Olympic gold, and he said, “We almost played three hours for two sets. It was an incredible battle, incredible fight. When the last shot went past him, that was the only moment I actually thought I could win the match. I mean, I believed that I could win, but to actually win it, because he keeps on coming back. He keeps on asking me to play my best tennis.”

“I don’t know what to say. I’m still in shock, honestly. I put my heart, my soul, my body, my family, my everything on the line to win Olympic gold at age 37. I finally did it.”

Rubber Match in US Open?

Men’s tennis has its next great rivalry. These players are at the top of their games and test each other to the limit. Alcaraz had a much easier time with Djokovic on the grass at Wimbledon. They did not play in the French Open as the Serb was recovering from a knee injury that required surgery.

Up next on the tennis schedule for both is the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open. It would be a fitting way to complete the majors if the pair met in the final. Consider it a late-summer rubber match. However, each must battle through the field to make this happen. Djokovic leads the head-to-head matchups 4-3.

In tennis odds, figure Djokovic and Alcaraz to be the top two choices in the men’s field at Flushing Meadows in New York. Djokovic wins Olympic gold and joins Steffi Graf, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams as Golden Slammers. Alcaraz was defeated but knows the future is ahead of him at such a young age in tennis.

My moment will come” said Alcaraz, who was never broken in the two-set loss. “I will bring the gold medal to Spain one day.”

Djokovic wins Olympic gold, solidifying his status as one of the greatest in the sport’s history.
