Ex-NFL great Terrell Davis banned by United Airlines

Pro Football Hall of Famer Posts Letter Detailing He Is on “No Fly List”

Terrell Davis would certainly dispute United Airlines’ catchphrase of “Fly the Friendly Skies.” The bizarre incident that saw the Pro Football Hall of Famer handcuffed after a recent flight has now seen the former Denver Broncos great banned by the airline. Terrell Davis banned after the incident has caused quite a stir.

Per Davis:

Adding insult to injury, @united not only had me removed from their flight in handcuffs but placed me on their No Fly List after it was determined I did nothing wrong and was released. While my family and I continue to have difficult conversations with our children, I will continue to fight for what is right for all passengers of @united. Please contact @sgghlaw for any inquiries, and please reshare this post.”

United backed off, sort of, kind of, maybe not.

Following Davis’ Instagram post on Monday, United released the following statement:

Mr. Davis received this letter the day after the incident. It was generated due to the report of the flight attendant – who is no longer employed by United. The day after the letter was sent, we discussed with Mr. Davis’ team that it had been rescinded. We have apologized to Mr. Davis for his experience and continue to review our handling of incidents like this to protect our highest priority – the safety of our customers and crew.

After United’s statement, Davis’ attorney released a statement:

Up until today, we had received no correspondence or communication indicating that the travel ban had been rescinded. Mr. Davis did not see the initial correspondence until recently, and we have released the email because of the lack of response from United across the board. We can confirm we had received no rescinding of this ban until today, just moments ago, and only after Mr. Davis posted his statement.

The Background

This stems from a flight from Denver to Orange County (CA) in mid-July. Terrell Davis banned for tapping a flight attendant asking for a cup of ice. That is when the attendant allegedly shouted, “Don’t hit me” according to Davis’ Instagram post. It got stranger when the plane landed.

The agent walks up to me, and he leans over and whispers, ‘Don’t fight it,’ and he put the cuffs on me” Davis told CBS Mornings in an interview a few days after what he says was an embarrassing and shocking incident. He says he was in disbelief that the shoulder-tapping could have led to him being detained by federal officers.

After the incident, United released the following statement: “This is clearly not the kind of travel experience we strive to provide, and we have reached out to Mr. Davis’s team to apologize. We have removed the flight attendant from duty while we closely review this matter.”

Somehow United miscommunicated with Davis or failed within its own business dealings, leading to Terrell Davis banned unfairly.

Who Is Terrell Davis?

Terrell Davis banned by United Airlines is one of the great underdog stories in NFL history. David played college football at Georgia and was drafted in the sixth round of the 1995 draft. He was an instant hit in the NFL, rushing for more than 1,000 yards as a rookie despite missing his last two games.

He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons. However, Davis’ career was derailed by numerous knee injuries. Despite these setbacks, he still managed to rush for 7,607 yards, including 2,008 in 1998.

In eight playoff games, he rushed for 1,140 yards. He was the MVP in Super Bowl XXXII, rushing for 157 yards and scoring three touchdowns on 30 carries.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
