On Wednesday, the NCAA punished the former University of Michigan football coach with a four-year show cause order, including a one-year suspension. The order, covering 2024-28, requires any school hiring Harbaugh to suspend him for the first full season. After that, the NCAA will ban Harbaugh from sports-related activities, including team travel, practice, video study, recruiting, and team meetings, until the order ends.

These violations tie to impermissible recruiting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The result of Jim Harbaugh’s infractions in college football news:

A Division I Committee on Infractions panel found that former Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh broke recruiting rules, acted unethically, failed to encourage a compliant environment, and did not meet head coach responsibilities, leading to a four-year show-cause order.

Harbaugh’s violations of the COVID-19 recruiting dead period are Level II violations. However, his unethical behavior and failure to cooperate with the investigation — specifically, giving false or misleading information — is a Level I violation.

Harbaugh’s Severe Penalties for Intentional NCAA Violations

The panel noted Harbaugh’s intentional disregard for NCAA rules and unethical behavior. This made the case more severe. The panel classified Harbaugh’s case as Level I-Aggravated. Penalties include a four-year show-cause order, which includes a one-season suspension for Harbaugh.

During the show-cause order, Harbaugh is banned from all sports-related activities. This includes team travel, practice, video study, recruiting, and team meetings. Also, if hired during the show-cause order, Harbaugh would be suspended for the entire first season. The results of those games would not count toward his career coaching record.

Harbaugh’s violations are unrelated to the Conor Stalions scandal. That issue remains unresolved. This week, reports indicate Sherrone Moore replaced Harbaugh as head coach. Moore filled in during Harbaugh’s suspensions at Michigan.
