Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege dies in Tour of Austria accident
25-year-old killed had won seven races in 2024 and had bright futue

The world of cycling is in shock after the Norway’s Andre Drege died in an accident in tne Tour of Austria. The crash occurred on a downhill section of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain.
André Drege, a promising Norwegian cyclist, tragically passed away on July 6, 2024, during the descent on stage 4 of the Tour of Austria. Drege, who was born on May 4, 1999, in Ålesund, Norway, was riding for Team Coop-Repsol at the time of his death. He had shown great potential throughout his career, securing notable victories and high placements in various races. The cause of the crash was not revealed.

The 25-year-old Drege from the Coop Repsol team fell on the descent from the Grossglockner to Heiligenblut and succumbed to his injuries. Details of the accident – Drege was part of the breakaway group and was rescued by a rescue helicopter – were not yet available.
Tour director Thomas Pupp released a statement:
“The Tour of Austria mourns the loss of André Drege. (…). The organizers of the Tour of Austria and the race management immediately informed the relatives. After the stage, there was a meeting with all 20 team leaders and the UCI. It was unanimously decided that André’s family and his team – all riders and the support staff – would make the decision together with the organization about holding the final stage planned for tomorrow.”
