Swiatek Not High on Grass (Courts)

Iga Swiatek came into the third Grand Slam of the tennis calendar as the heavy favorite in the All-England Club grass court event.

However, a student of tennis would have recognized that four of Swiatek’s five Grand Slam championships have come on the clay court surface of the French Open at Roland Garrros. She has never thrived on the Wimbledon grass surface, only winning the junior event on the grass.

Putintseva was an unlikely upsetter in the Wimbledon tournament She is ranked 35th in the world and in four previous matches with Swiatek had not taken a set from her Polish opponent.

So, Who is Yulia Putintseva?

Putintseva was born in Russia but has played out of Kazahstan since 2012. She is 5-foot-4 and 29 years old.

Her 2024 earnings are better than $750,000, far from near what a top player has made. She has won one singles tournament in 2024 and three overall. Her career earnings are better than better than $7.6 million. Gives you an idea of how great it is to be a tennis pro because Putintseva’s career record coming into Wimbledon was a mediocre 418-319.

Putintseva’s highest career ranking was 24th. She came into the Wimbledon tournament with a 28-15 mark in 2024, illustrating how playing deep into tournaments was uncommon for this tennis player

Look for her to move up in the women’s tennis rankings even if this upset is her last win in the 2024 Wimbledon tournament. Her best Grand Slam tournaments have been as a three-time quarterfinalist, twice at the French and once at the US Open.

Yulia knocking off Iga will gather her some attention … for one day at least.

Putintseva knock off Swiatek: High Seeds Fading Fast

With Swiatek’s exit, two of the top-five seeds in the women’s draw remain: second-seeded American Coco Gauff and fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina, who won the Wimbledon title in 2022.

Third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka withdrew with a shoulder injury ahead of the first round and fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula lost earlier this week.
