Medvedev came into the match as the fifth seed. In tennis news during his career, he has reached the No. 1 spot in the world rankings and won the 2021 US Open when he denied Novak Djokovic the calendar Grand Slam.
The match against Sinner took four hours and the maximum of five sets for Medvedev to advance.

This will be the second straight year Medvedev has reached the Wimbledon semifinals. He is the sixth active player to reach the Wimbledon semifinals multiple times.
Controversial Medical Timeout
Sinner needed a medical timeout that lasted 11 minutes while trailing 1-2 in the third set. He came back to the court and lost that set in a tiebreak before rallying to win the fourth set.
That led to the do-or-die final set, and Sinner could not handle Medvedev. The 2024 Australian Open champion was the top seed in a major for the first time, drawing significant tennis betting interest. However, Sinner out of Wimbledon means he joined Swiatek, who lost in the third round on the women’s side.
Sinner had won his past five meetings against Medvedev, including at this year’s Australian Open, where he rallied from two sets down in the final to clinch his first major title.
Sinner is 42-4 on the year and was seeking to become the first Italian man to reach multiple Wimbledon semifinals. Despite his impressive season, Sinner out of Wimbledon marks a significant upset in this year’s tournament.
