UConn Signs Coach Dan Hurley to $50 Million Contract

Pact Lasts Six Years and Runs Through 2029-30 Season

UConn and Dan Hurley have agreed to a contract extension with a Dan Hurley $50M contract, keeping the Huskies’ two-time winning championship coach at the school through the 2029-30 season.

College basketball news reports the contract is for six years and a whopping Dan Hurley $50M contract. In Storrs, Ct, that’s beaucoup money. Hurley will receive a base salary of $400,000 per year and additional compensation for speaking, consulting, and media obligations of $6.375 million for the 2024-25 season, per the Huskies’ announcement.

He will also receive a retention bonus of $1 million per year, which will benefit the Huskies in case other college programs or NBA teams attempt to lure Hurley.

Turned Down Los Angeles Lakers

Hurley decided last month to stay as a college basketball coach however, after receiving a six-year, $70 million contract offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Hurley was flown to Los Angeles by the NBA team and met with its brass, including owner Jeanie Buss and GM Rob Pelinka.

However, upon returning to Connecticut and meeting with his wife, Hurley decided to stay in college basketball.

That led to negotiations and the six-year, $50 million contract.

The cost of living in Storrs or its surrounding areas is cheaper but unlikely to be $20 million less throughout this contract.

Dan Hurley $50M Contract: Thrilled To Be Staying with Huskies

“It’s an honor to coach basketball at UConn and to represent this world class institution and the great state of Connecticut,” Hurley said in a statement released by the school. “We are extremely proud of the championship program that we have rebuilt for our supporters and fans. We will continue to obsessively pursue championships and historic success, while continuing to develop great young men. Bleed Blue!”

Athletic director David Benedict spoke on behalf of the school, saying, “Dan and (his wife) Andrea have poured themselves into the rebuilding of this program that culminated in the last two National Championships. This contract is recognition for the immense amount of effort that went into producing those results and the dedication it will require to sustain a program that expects to compete for conference and national championships in the future.”

Legendary Basketball Genes

Hurley will be entering his seventh season at Connecticut in 2024-25. His record with the Huskies is 141-58. Overall, he is 292-163, having been head coach also at Wagner in Staten Island (NY), and Rhode Island.

In addition, while winning consecutive national titles, UConn has gone 67-11, the best two-year stretch in Connecticut history.

Hurley comes from a storied basketball family. His father, Bob, was a legendary coach at Jersey City’s St. Anthony, and his brother, Bobby, starred at Duke as a player and currently is head coach at Arizona State.
