USA Captures Medal Count on Tiebreaker with China
Tied in Golds, Silvers Make the Difference
The United States won the 2024 Paris medal count duel with China in the Summer Olympics. In Olympic news and women’s basketball news, the USA and China tied with 40 gold medals each. The tiebreaker came down to what country won more silvers, and the USA had the edge, 44-27, securing their position at the top of the 2024 Paris medal count.
So despite China 🇨🇳 winning some weird gold medals + 1.4Billion people, France 🇫🇷 hosting the Olympics, England 🏴 putting 4 countries together and Australia 🇦🇺 training with real kangaroos…

So now, NBC Sports, which has been showing the USA ahead throughout on the chart despite China often leading in golds, can boast that the U.S. actually is finally ahead in the 2024 Paris medal count.
Nothing like manipulating the truth.
Not the Same Without Russia
There was a time when the medal count was a daily duel throughout the Summer Olympics Games. Those were the days when there was a Cold War and communist Russia sent a powerhouse team to the event every four years. Talk about a reason for the country to come together with national pride. Beating the Russians on the medal chart was riveting.
These Olympics, the 2024 Paris medal count almost seemed like an aside. A mention here, a mention there, but no one was focused on who was winning. Then, it came down to the last day, the last event, and suddenly there was major interest in whether the USA would best China.
Of course, there were ongoing insinuations about doping with the Chinese athletes — anything to control the narrative and create a good vs. evil script.
Tying By Avoiding a Tie
It came down to the women’s basketball gold medal game on Sunday, and the USA won over France, 67-66. The game came down to a final shot that saw a French player’s toe on the 3-point line, or else the game would have gone to overtime.

The shot was a two-pointer, not a three, and the USA had its eighth straight women’s basketball gold. Diana Taurasi had her sixth gold, and everyone could finally address the 2024 Paris medal count issue comfortably. Winning changes everything, right?
