Bayer Leverkusen Stats History
Wilhelm Hauschild wrote a letter to Friedrich Bayer and Co in 1903 attempting to start a sports club. The company supported their employee’s ideas and founded Turn-und Spielverein Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1904. In 1928 the soccer team split off from the gymnastics club and formed Sportvereinigung Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
The team wasn’t much to write home about in the 1930s. Then, Bayer Leverkusen were regular participants in the third and fourth divisions of German soccer. Gradually, Bayer climbed to the top tier of German football. They reached the second division in 1936 and played in the top-tier Oberliga West for the first time in 1951.
Bayer Leverkusen were in the top flight one season before the creation of the Bundesliga but were then relegated. They almost made their first Bundesliga appearance in 1968 but couldn’t advance through the promotion playoffs. So, the Bayer Leverkusen stats show their first Bundesliga season as 1980.

The first major trophy Leverkusen won was in 1988. The UEFA Cup, now the Europa League, used to have a two-legged final. Bayer went down 3-0 to Espanyol in the first leg and looked done and dusted. Then, they leveled the fixture up in Leverkusen and won in penalties.
After German reunification, the club recruited heavily from former East Germany and Brazil. Leverkusen then found success domestically in the 90s as they won the 1993 DFB-Pokal.
Bayer were also quite unlucky during this period. The Bayern Leverkusen stats display four second-place Bundesliga finishes from 1997 to 2002. In 2000 and 2002, they controlled their destiny but suffered historic collapses. In 2002, they also lost in the UEFA Champions League final and the DFB-Pokal final.
With a second-place finish in 2010-11, Bayer Leverkusen became Bundesliga runners-up for the fifth time. Leverkusen are still looking for an elusive title but they are regular participants in the Champions League. With an exciting attacking trio of Florian Wirtz, Patrik Schick and Moussa Diaby, betting advice suggests Bayer Leverkusen are on the rise.
Heading into the 2022-23 season, Bayer have the fourth-best odds to win the league. They currently sit at +2500 preseason Bundesliga odds and will be competing in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.
