FC Augsburg Stats & History
A merger of TSV Schwaben and BC Augsburg created FC Augsburg in 1969. The club played in the second and third divisions early on and struggled to gain traction. In 1970-71 Augsburg averaged just 300 supporters per match. The return of former German international forward, Helmut Haller, changed the fortunes of the club dramatically.
FC Augsburg averaged 22,000 fans in 1973-74 when Haller arrived. The first title in the Augsburg team stats was during that season and they were nearly promoted to the Bundesliga. They settled for a place in the newly created 2. Bundesliga, instead. Augsburg regularly finished near the bottom of the table and were relegated in 1979.
Upon returning to the Bavarian league, Augsburg immediately won it. However, they were unable to progress through the promotion playoffs and spent most of the 1980s in the third tier. In fact, Augsburg were stuck on the third level of the German soccer pyramid until the mid 90s. Instead of going up, they went down to the fourth tier. That was because Augsburg were unable to secure a license in the Regionalliga due to financial troubles at the time.

FC Augsburg Team Records
When Walther Seinsch took over as chairman at the turn of the century, Augsburg started their climb towards the Bundesliga. In 2002 they earned a promotion back to the third tier. In their next four seasons, they managed to finish in the top four in each one. Finally, Augsburg won the Regionalliga Sud in 2006 to return to the 2. Bundesliga after a 23-year absence.
The 2009-10 season was one of the best 2. Bundesliga seasons in the FC Augsburg team stats. They finished third in the league and reached the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal. After a 43-year wait, Augsburg finally reached the Bundesliga in 2011. Impressively, they’ve remained in the top tier ever since.
