Sporting CP Stats & History

Jose Alvalade borrowed money from his grandfather to found Sporting Clube de Portugal in 1906. He and other former members of the Sport Club de Belas broke away from the club to focus more on athletics. They first played in the Primeira Liga in 1935 and have become one of the biggest three clubs in Portugal.

Under Hungarian manager Jozsef Szabo, they added their first league title to the Sporting CP stats in 1941. Sporting’s best years were in the 1940s and 50s. During that time, they were led by five players dubbed “The Five Violins”. Those club legends were all-time leading scorer Peyroteo, Albano Pereira, Jesus Correia, Manuel Vasques, and Jose Travassos.

This quintet won seven league titles in eight seasons from 1947 to 1954. Sporting won four titles in a row from 1950-51 to 1953-54. They also added four Taca de Portugal trophies to the Sporting Lisbon stats in the 1940s.

Sporting won their only European title in the 1960s. After winning the 1963 Taca de Portugal, they entered the 1963-64 European Cup Winners’ Cup. By defeating MTK Budapest in the final, Sporting became the only Portuguese soccer team to win the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Sporting CP Team Records

The Lisbon club won the league and Taca de Portugal double in 1982 but suffered a lengthy title drought afterward. After 18 years without a trophy, Sporting won the Primeira Liga title again in 2000. After their 2002 league title, Sporting didn’t win the league again until 2021. However, they have found success in the Taca da Liga in recent seasons. Sporting won the competition in 2022, and they have done so in four of the last five seasons.

Sporting only trails Benfica for most wins in the Taca da Liga, which was created in the 2007-08 season. Benfica are Sporting’s biggest rivals, and they contest the Lisbon Derby, which is the biggest match in Portuguese soccer.

Regarding 19 Primeira Liga titles, Sporting only trail Porto and Benfica for the most titles. With a second-place finish in 2021-22, they should be contenders again in 2022-23. Their Champions League odds will be highly dependent on the group they get drawn in, though; betting advice does mention their excellent performances on the road, since they lost just one league match away in 2021-22.
