AFC Bournemouth Stats History

Originally known as Boscombe Football Club, AFC Bournemouth was established in 1899. The nickname “Cherries” most likely comes from the red-striped kits Bournemouth wore – and still wear today. They first competed in the FA Cup in the 1913-14 seasons, but played in the lower leagues for much of the 20th century.

Bournemouth had one of the longest spells of any club in the third division. The first trophy in the Bournemouth stats is a Third Division South Cup final win post-WWII. The Bournemouth logo is distinct for its silhouette of a player heading the ball. It pays homage to Dickie Dowsett, a club legend from the 1950s and 60s.

One of the more impressive AFC Bournemouth stats is an 11-0 win over Margate in the 1971 FA Cup. In that match, Ted MacDougall scored an incredible nine goals. Bournemouth also recorded a famous win over Manchester United in the 1984 FA Cup.

Despite playing in the fourth division for a spell in the mid-70s and early 80s, things changed under Harry Redknapp. In 1987, with Redknapp at the helm, Bournemouth reached the second tier for the first time. Upon relegation in 1990, Bournemouth remained in the third tier for the rest of the decade.

In 2007-08, with massive financial troubles, AFC Bournemouth very nearly ceased to exist. They were relegated to the fourth tier, but managed an incredible climb over the next six years. With Eddie Howe as Bournemouth’s new manager, they earned promotion back to League One, the third tier. Howe left for Burnley at the end of the season, but returned to Bournemouth in the middle of the EPL 2012-13 season.

Despite being near the bottom of the table when Howe took over again, Bournemouth finished in second place. With that, they earned promotion to the EFL Championship. In 2014-15, AFC Bournemouth clinched their first-ever promotion to the Premier League. Tipped to go down in their first season, they beat the Premier League odds and finished 16th.

Bournemouth’s first stay in the Premier League lasted five years and they managed a high of ninth place in 2016-17. Howe left the club in 2020 but Scott Parker led the Cherries to another Premier League return in 2022. Betting advice warns that Bournemouth are relegation favorites, at -175 odds.
