Aston Villa Team Stats & History

One of the oldest English football clubs, Aston Villa were founded in 1874 by members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel. In 1886, George Ramsay became the first-ever paid football manager. One of the most successful periods in the club’s history followed his appointment.

Aston Villa won the 1887 FA Cup and became a founding member of the Football League in 1888. Villa won their first league title in 1894 and won back-to-back titles in 1896 and 1897. In 1897 they also moved into Villa Park, which is their home stadium to this day.

After 40 years in charge, Ramsay retired in 1926 with six league titles and six FA Cups to his name. Villa weren’t as successful after Ramsay’s retirement, but they set a top-flight record in the 1930-31 season. They scored 128 goals, which remains one of the most astounding Aston Villa team stats. From 1920 to 1934, Billy Walker scored 244 goals in 531 appearances and remains Villa’s all time leading scorer.

Aston Villa Team Records

Aston Villa were relegated for the first time in 1936, but returned to the top flight shortly after. In 1956-57 Villa won a then-record seventh FA Cup, their first trophy in 37 years. In 1961, the Claret and Blue were the first team to win the Football League Cup.

Through most of the 60s and early 70s, Villa were in the English Second Division but returned to the top flight in 1975. Villa won a seventh league title in 1981 and reached their pinnacle shortly after. Ron Saunders quit midway through the season, but interim manager Tony Barton led Villa to their first ever UEFA Cup title, with a 1-0 win vs. Bayern Munich.

The next season, Aston Villa went on to win the UEFA Super Cup vs Barcelona. In one of the most impressive Aston Villa team stats, Villa are just one of five English teams to win the UEFA Cup/Champions League.

Villa were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. They won two League Cups in the 90’s but have been unable to defy the EPL odds and win the Premier League. After some time spent in the Championship, Aston Villa’s current spell in the Premier League began in 2019.

Betting advice suggests Aston Villa could be an improved team in 2022-23 after a 14th place finish in 2021-22. However, they’re still massive longshots to win the league, so finishing in a European place is a more realistic target for manager Steven Gerrard.
