Burnley Team Stats History

Founded first as the Burnley Rovers rugby club, Burnley F.C. switched to soccer in 1882. Since joining the Football League in 1888, Burnley have won every major English trophy except for the League Cup

Burnley’s first major honor was winning the Second Division title in 1898 to get promoted to the first tier. One of the most cherished Burnley team stats, the Clarets defeated Liverpool in the 1914 FA Cup final, 1-0.

Possibly the most impressive Burnley F.C. team stat is their run of 30 unbeaten league games during the 1920-21 season. That same season, Burnley won their first ever top flight title. Burnley stuck around the top flight for the entirety of the 1920’s but were relegated in 1930.

The Clarets returned to the First Division in 1948 and the best spell in their history followed. Starting in 1952-53, Burnley finished in the top half for twelve consecutive seasons. Burnley won their second top flight title in 1960.

In 1962, Burnley finished runners up in the league to Ipswich Town and lost the FA Cup final to Tottenham. In the 1966-67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the precursor to the UEFA Europa League, Burnley made the quarterfinals.

After a good run in the First Division, the Clarets were relegated in 1971. They returned to the top tier in 1973 for three seasons but shockingly fell to the fourth tier by 1985. In 1986-87, Burnley were one loss away from dropping out of the Football League altogether but defeated Leyton Orient 2-1 on the final day.

When Burnley won the Fourth Division title in 1992, they became just the second team to win all four professional division titles in English soccer. They bounced around the lower leagues for much of the 90’s and the 2000’s and made their Premier League debut in 2009.

Burnley’s return to the top flight began with a 1-0 win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. However, it ended in relegation back to the Championship. Sean Dyche’s appointment as head coach in 2012 reversed Burnley’s fortunes, though.

Dyche led Burnley back to the Premier League on two separate occasions and their most recent spell lasted six seasons. The Clarets finished seventh in the 2017-18 Premier League season, reaching the Europa League Playoffs. Dyche, however, was dismissed in 2022 and Burnley were relegated back to the Championship.

As of the 2022-23 season, Burnley is back in the second tier of English soccer. So, to bet on Burnley, the betting advice would be to make sure to navigate to English Championship Odds instead of EPL odds while they take on lesser opponents than in the Premier League.
