West Ham United Stats & History
The predecessor to West Ham United, Thames Ironworks, was founded in 1895. They turned professional in 1898 and disbanded in 1900, but immediately relaunched as West Ham United FC. They moved to the Boleyn Ground in 1904, where they played until 2016.
The Hammers first entered the English Football League in 1919, in the Second Division. In 1923, West Ham made the FA Cup final and were promoted to Division One for the first time. Their first spell in the top flight lasted until 1933, and they didn’t return until 1958.
Some of the most notable West Ham stats came under manager Ron Greenwood. West Ham won their first major trophy in 1964 as they defeated Preston North End 3-2 at Wembley Stadium. The Hammers also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965.
Three West Ham legends played key roles in helping England win their first World Cup in 1966. Geoff Hurst scored the first ever hat trick in a World Cup final and Martin Peters added another. Hammers’ captain Bobby Moore was also England’s captain in 1966.

West Ham also won the FA Cup final in 1975, but were relegated to the second tier in 1978. Even as a Second Division team, West Ham won their third FA Cup trophy in 1980. This is one of the more notable West Ham United stats, since no team in the second tier or below has won it since.
In 1981, West Ham won the Second Division, and finished a club-record third in the first division in 1985-86. The Hammers spent most of the 90s in the Premier League, and won the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup.
West Ham’s current spell in the Premier League has lasted over ten years. The Hammers made the semifinals of the Europa League in 2022 under David Moyes.
