Founded in 1877 as St. Luke’s FC, they became a founding member of the Football League in 1888. Wolves finished their first season in the top tier in third place, and moved to their current home, the Molineux, shortly after. 

Wolves won their first major trophy in 1893, triumphing 1-0 over Everton in the FA Cup final. Wolves dropped into the Second Division in 1906, but still managed to win the 1908 FA Cup. They suffered another relegation in 1923 but were back in the top tier by 1932.

In both 1937-38 and 1938-39, Wolves finished as runners-up in the league. Stan Cullis is a legendary figure in Wolves history, both as a player and as a manager. In the former defender’s first season in charge of Wolves, he led them to their first FA Cup trophy for 41 years.

Some of the most impressive Wolverhampton Wanderers stats came under Cullis in the 1950s. They won their first top-tier title in 1954, and won back-to-back league titles in 1958 and 1959. From 1958 to 1959, Wolves managed to score in a club-record 41 consecutive matches.

Wolves also won the 1960 FA Cup, but Cullis was sacked in 1964 after sixteen years in charge. Relegation came in 1965, but Wolves were back in the top flight within two years; success followed. Wolves won the League Cup in both 1974 and 1980. 

Amid a financial crisis, Wolves dropped all the way down to the Fourth Division in 1986. After spending the better part of two decades in the lower leagues, Wolves made the Premier League in 2003. Wolves were relegated in consecutive seasons in 2012 and 2013, but returned to the EPL in 2018. Under Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves made the Europa League quarterfinals in 2020. 

Some of the most notable Wolves team stats leaders are Derek Parkin, Steve Bull and Raul Jimenez. Parkin is the Wolves’ all-time leader in appearances, Steve Bull is WWFC’s top scorer, and Jimenez has the most Premier League goals of any Wolves player.

Despite finishing in tenth place, Wolves were excellent defensively in 2021-22. In Bruno Lage’s first season as coach, they conceded the fifth-fewest goals in the Premier League.
