Circuit Information

The Baku City Circuit is 3.730 miles in length with 20 corners. It’s the fourth-longest track on the 2023 calendar behind the Belgian Grand Prix, Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and the new Las Vegas Street Circuit. It features the longest straight in Formula 1 at 0.74 miles (1.2 kilometers). Because of this and the sharp, low-speed corners, it’s a challenge for teams to set up the cars correctly.
The current F1 lap record is 1:43.009 set by Charles Leclerc in the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The circuit’s seating capacity is 18,500.
The F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is held in the mid-spring or early summer months and has only seen dry warm conditions.

History of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
The first Formula One Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit was held in 2016. Given the sharp turns, high speeds, and narrow walls in the middle sector, it was expected to be a race with a high potential for collisions.
But there were no safety car periods during the 2016 race to the surprise of some drivers as Nico Rosberg took the inaugural win at the Baku City Circuit.
In subsequent years, there have been multiple incidents and safety car periods. The 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix saw some controversy as Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari ran into Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes behind the safety car.
Vettel then drove alongside Hamilton and swerved into him, arguing Hamilton brake-tested him. That was later disproved by car data and replays.
The 2020 round of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been a different winner in every Formula 1 race held at the Baku City Circuit. In 2016, Rosberg won with Mercedes.
Daniel Ricciardo won in a Red Bull in 2017; Hamilton won in 2018 with Mercedes; Valterri Bottas won a year later with Mercedes; Red Bull has won the last two races in 2021 with Sergio Perez and 2022 with Max Verstappen.Â
