Circuit Information

The current Zandvoort consists of 14 turns and is listed as an FIA Grade 1 circuit. Lewis Hamilton set a new lap record in 2021 at 1:11:097 although it was Verstappen who won the race. From 1948 to 2022, the circuit has been altered over six times.

A corner of note is the “Tarzan corner” or the “Tarzanbocht”, which is famous for being a fast sweeping corner at the end of the start/finish straight. The camber in the corner allows for overtaking opportunities hence where most of the drama happens.

History of Dutch Grand Prix

The first Dutch GP was held in 1950. Louis Rosier of Talbot-Lago won this inaugural race and the one the following year. By the 1960s, Clark dominated on this circuit although its conditions began to deteriorate. During the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix, Piers Courage died when he crashed near the Tunnell Oost corner. And by 1972, the drivers refused to participate for fear of their safety.

After undergoing extensive remodification, Zandvoort returned to the F1 calendar in 1973. Niki Lauda and James Hunt alternated winning as they fought in the F1 standings. In 1985, Lauda won the final race in Zandvoort before it took a 25-year hiatus.
