🏁 Qatar GP History & Highlights

The Losail International Circuit first opened in 2004 after just under a year of construction. It’s built outside of Lusail, a city north of Doha in Qatar. MotoGP was the first racing series to race on the Losail International Circuit that year and visited every year since, except in 2020.

The circuit added permanent outdoor lighting for night F1 races in 2007. At the time, it was the largest permanent sports venue lighting project in the world. The 2008 Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix was the first night race in MotoGP history. The Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi took over the status as the largest permanent sports venue lighting project in 2009.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2021 Australian Grand Prix was set for October of that season but was later canceled. Formula 1 organizers decided the Qatar Grand Prix made a suitable replacement and the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix was held in November 2021.

Formula 1 did not return in 2022 due to scheduling conflicts with the 2022 FIFA World Cup, But F1 announced a 10-year contract with the circuit starting in 2023.

Like the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Qatar Grand Prix has been criticized for sports washing. Amnesty International cited human rights conditions as the reason for the criticism. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix in 2021. In anticipation of the upcoming event, fans and bookmakers are already speculating on the 2023 Qatar GP Odds.

The front straight is more than one kilometer long and leaves lots of space for overtaking. Like other night races, practice sessions are often during the day, so the temperature can fluctuate and affect setups.

The current F1 lap record is 1:23.196 set by Max Verstappen in the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix. The circuit’s seating capacity is 8,000.
