Connecticut Sportsbooks Hit New Low in 2024

Connecticut's April Betting Handle Totals $156.8M

Connecticut sportsbooks struck it big in March, reeling in $187.7 million in bets.

The following month, however, wasn’t nearly as prosperous.

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection reported a betting handle of $156.8 million in April, the lowest amount wagered in the Constitution State since last August.

Online sportsbooks accounted for most of the action, collecting $149.4 million in wagers and $17.4 million in gross gaming revenue. Meanwhile, the state’s two retail sportsbooks took in $7.3 million in GGR.

UConn Basketball Takes Center Stage

March is typically a big month for sportsbooks, highlighted by the NCAA Tournament. College basketball’s marquee event draws in all types of fans, from the casuals to the diehards.

The UConn men dominated the competition, blitzing Purdue 75-60 in the national championship game to win their second consecutive title. The Huskies covered in all six tournament games, duplicating a feat from 2023 when they beat San Diego State 76-59 in the final.

Geno Auriemma’s UConn women’s squad also made a deep run, falling 71-69 to Iowa in the national semifinals.

While Connecticut does not allow residents to bet on in-state teams, mirroring regulations from New Jersey and Virginia, both teams fueled interest locally.

With April being a quieter month on the sports calendar, especially in a state with only one professional team (the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun), betting totals were due to fall. That’s the most logical explanation for Connecticut’s April betting handle falling.

Despite April’s lagging numbers, GGR is up 38.3% year-over-year in Connecticut. January has been the best month for Connecticut sportsbooks, with a handle totaling $202.6 million.

FanDuel Head of the Class

Online sports betting has been legal in Connecticut since Sept. 30, 2021. The state still only has three operators, with industry leaders DraftKings and FanDuel consistently dominating the action.

There’s also Fanatics Sportsbook, which recently replaced PlaySugarHouse as the state’s third best betting site.

Additionally, Connecticut also has brick-and-mortar locations at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard. Individuals must be at least 21 years old to play online casino games or wager on sports.

Online sportsbooks accounted for 95% of all betting activity in Connecticut during April. FanDuel collected $71.3 million in handle and $9.2 million in revenue to pace the action for the 12th time in 13 months.

Those numbers fell way short of March’s $89.2 million handle and $8.8 million in revenue. Second was DraftKings ($63.8 million handle, $6.7 million revenue), with Fanatics ($14.2 million handle, $1.3 million revenue) a distant third.

Tax Revenue Grows

April brought $2.1 million in tax revenue for the state, up from $1.8 million in March. Altogether, Connecticut sportsbooks have reeled in $8.4 million in taxes since the beginning of January.

That marks a year-over-year increase of more than $2 million, proving its economic value to the state.
