Pennsylvania April Betting Handle Breaks $645 Million

State Shows Solid Increase From April 2023

April turned out to be a pretty solid month for Pennsylvania sportsbooks and sports betting apps. The Pennsylvania April betting handle came in at $646.1 million, which is up 12.9% from April 2023’s $572 million handle. As expected, April’s handle was considerably lower than March.

Sportsbooks know the volume of betting is going to be decreasing for the next couple of months. April’s handle was down 19.3% from the roughly $800 million that was bet in March.

While the Pennsylvania April betting handle was down significantly from the previous month, revenue didn’t fare too bad. The state’s sportsbooks reported $59.1 million in revenue, which was down just 7.2% from March.

The state had a higher hold percentage in April, which kept revenue up from Pennsylvania gambling.

The state’s sportsbooks did claim $16.7 million in deductions from promotional credits and other expenses. That left an adjusted gross revenue of $42.4 million for the month.

The state will receive $14.4 million in tax revenue for the month.

That’s up 14.52% from the $37 million the state received in April 2023.The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported that $40.9 million in adjusted gross revenue came from online betting.

Just $1.4 million was generated at retail sportsbooks and three retail locations reported revenue losses for the month.

Fantasy sports brought in another $1.2 million in revenue for April, although that’s a 20.83% decrease from the $1.55 million they brought in during April 2023. DraftKings led the way with revenue of $919,949 for the month and FanDuel was second with $211,873.

FanDuel Running Away With Sports Betting Dollars

While DraftKings was the state leader in fantasy sports revenue, it was all FanDuel as it pertains to sports betting. The sportsbook had handle of $272.3 million for the month.

That led to revenue of $25.4 million in April after claiming $7 million in promotional credits. That’s close to half of the promotional credits claimed in the state during April. FanDuel’s revenue jumped 19.19% from April 2023.

DraftKings was a distant second in terms of Pennsylvania April betting handle. The sportsbook received $168.2 million in wagers, which led to $9.8 million in adjusted gross revenue. That’s an 8.47% increase from April 2023, which isn’t bad, but is well below the gain of FanDuel.

The battle for third place was tight, however, ESPN Bet claimed the spot after accepting $41.6 million in wagers. The sportsbook had $2.16 million in adjusted gross revenue after claiming nearly $1.5 million in promotional credits.

That was the best month ESPN Bet has reported in 2024 and is more than double the revenue from Barstool Sportsbook in April 2023.

BetMGM reported $39 million in handle for April, putting it at No. 4 in handle for the month. That led to $1.1 million in adjusted gross revenue after more than $1 million was claimed in promotional credits.

BetMGM reported revenue of $1.13 million in 2023, so there was a slight 1.26% decrease in revenue from a year ago.

BetRivers and Caesar’s were neck-and-neck for the No. 5 spot. BetRivers finished with $26.7 million in handle, while Caesar’s reported $26.1 million. Fanatics also had total handle exceeding $20 million for the month, but had higher revenue than BetRivers or Caesar’s.

Fanatics reported a hold of 8.5%, while BetRivers and Caesar’s were both below 5% for the month.
