Atletico Madrid Stats & History

Atletico Madrid was founded in 1903 by Basque students who initially viewed Atletico as the youth branch of Athletic Bilbao. Hence why both clubs wear red and white striped kits to this day. In 1921, Atletico Madrid became independent of Athletic Club but major trophies were hard to come by in the 20s.

In 1921, though, Los Rojiblancos were runners up to Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey. Atletico also played in the first La Liga season, in 1928-29. During the 30s, they bounced around La Liga and the second division.

Under manager Ricardo Zamora, Atletico won back-to-back La Liga titles in 1940 and 1941. One of the most historic moments in the Atletico Madrid stats is when they repeated the feat in 1950 and 1951. Although Atletico lost to rivals Real Madrid in the 1959 European Cup semifinals, they got their revenge soon after.

Atletico defeated Real Madrid in successive Copa Del Rey finals in 1960 and 1961. This remains one of the high points in the Atletico team stats and they’d go on to win the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962 as well.

In the 60s and 70s, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were the two best teams in Spanish soccer. Real won La Liga 14 times from 1961 to 1980 while Atletico won four times. Los Rojiblancos also won the Copa Del Rey in 1965, 1972 and 1976. In 1974, Atletico made their first European Cup final but fell to a stacked Bayern Munich team.

Atletico de Madrid Team Records

Legendary player Luis Aragones became coach after the 1974 European Cup final. He was able to lead Atletico to a Copa Del Rey win in 1976 and a La Liga title in 1977. In subsequent spells as Atletico manager, Aragones also won two more Copa Del Reys.

Despite a lot of money invested into the side in the early 90s, Atletico only had a couple of Copa Del Reys to show for it. That changed in 1996 as Los Rojiblancos outperformed their La Liga odds and won the double. However, in 2000, Atletico Madrid were relegated for just the second time in 66 years.

Ten years later, Atletico kicked off the new millennium with a Europa League victory over Fulham. One of the most successful periods in club history followed as former player Diego Simeone was hired as coach in 2011. Under Simeone, Atletico won the 2012 Europa League, the 2013 Copa Del Rey and the 2014 La Liga title. In their first Champions League final since 1974, vs. rivals Real Madrid, Atletico lost in extra time.

In 2017, they moved to their current home, the Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico won the Europa League once more in 2018 and a surprise La Liga title in 2021. Betting advice suggests Atletico Madrid are one of the leading contenders to win the La Liga title in 2022-23. They’re priced at +550 odds.
