Girona FC Stats & History
Girona FC was established in 1930 and they were relatively successful early on. They ascended from the fourth tier of Spanish soccer to the second in just three years. In 1936, Girona won their group in the Segunda Division but fell short in the promotion playoffs.
In the coming decades, Girona oscillated between the second and third tiers but a decline followed. They moved into their current home, the Estadi Montilivi, in 1970. At this point, Girona frequently moved between the third and fourth tiers. They were even playing in the regional league in the early 80s and were in a host of financial troubles.
The club won the regional league to get back into the fourth tier on their first attempt. They also managed to ascend to the La Liga Segunda Division B in 1989. However, they were back down in the regional leagues from 1997-1999.

Things started to turn around for Girona in the 2000s. They managed to win successive promotions and were back in the second tier by 2008. The Girona FC stats show that 2008-09 was their first second-tier season for 49 years. In 2014-15, Girona nearly clinched automatic promotion to La Liga but failed to win their final match. Girona reached the promotion playoffs in 2013, 2015 and 2016 but couldn’t book their place in La Liga.
Finally, in 2017, Girona finished second in the Segunda Division to reach La Liga for the first time. In 2017, City Football Group, owners of Manchester City, purchased a substantial stake in Girona. With the backing of CFG, they outperformed the La Liga odds and finished in a respectable 10th place in 2017-18. However, they were relegated after their second season in the league.
Uruguayan forward Cristhian Stuani has left his mark on the Girona FC stats. He’s been their leading scorer for the last five seasons and is Girona’s all-time top goalscorer. Stuani scored 22 league goals in the 2021-22 season to lead Girona back to La Liga. They sealed their spot with a 3-1 win over Tenerife in the La Liga 2 promotion playoffs.
