OGC Nice Stats & History
Marquis de Massingy d’Auzac founded Gymnaste Club in 1904. In 1919, Nice merged with Gallia Football Athlétic Club, and adopted their black and red kits. In 1924, they changed their name to Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice. After French soccer moved to professionalism in 1930, Nice were one of the founding members of the first division.
In their first professional season, Nice finished seventh but were relegated one year later. OGC Nice wouldn’t return to the first division until 1949, but managed to finish in the top ten. A notable moment in the OGC Nice stats is their first top-tier title, in 1951. A season later, Les Aiglons one-upped themselves and managed their first ever league, plus a Coupe de France double.
The 50s ended up being the best decade in the history of the club. With a young Just Fontaine, Nice won the Coupe de France in 1954, plus the league title in 1956. Nice first appeared in the European Cup in the 1956-57 season and reached the quarterfinals. An important note in the OGC Nice stats is that they were the most successful top-tier team in the 1950s. By winning the 1959 league title, Nice finished the decade with four league trophies to Reims’ three.
Unfortunately for Nice fans, 1959 remains the last time they topped the Ligue 1 table. Other clubs, like Saint-Etienne, caught up to Nice and they suffered for it. Nice spent most of the 60s in Division 1 but were relegated twice. In the 70s, Nice came close to winning a title, and managed second-place finishes in both 1973 and 1976.

OGC Nice Team Records
The next milestone in OGC Nice history came in 1997 when they shockingly won the Coupe de France. This was a bittersweet time for the club, as Les Aiglons were relegated to Ligue 2 just days later. Nice’s most recent spell in the top flight began in 2002, and they were a mid-table side for most of the 2000s.
Nice made the Coupe de la Ligue final in 2006 but fell 2-1 to Nancy. In the 2010s, Nice regularly qualified for European competition through strong league finishes. They last played in the Champions League in 2016-17, after finishing third in Ligue 1 the previous season.
In 2022-23, Nice have +4000 Ligue 1 odds to win the title. In the offseason, though, coach Christophe Galtier departed for PSG. Lucien Favre, who managed the team from 2016 to 2018 is returning as head coach. Betting advice suggests Nice could be successful under Favre, as their last Champions League berth came under him.
