Pittsburgh Pirates Stats & Team History
The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the founding members of the American Association in 1881, under the original name of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. In 1987, they switched to the National League, which eventually filled into the creation of the MLB. It wasn’t until 1891 that the team’s name was changed from the Alleghenys to the Pirates, which has stayed the same since then. They played in the inaugural World Series in 1903 but lost, waiting until 1909 to win their first World Series. The Pirates team stats feature five World Series in their history, appearing in seven.
The Pittsburgh Pirates team stats have struggled since winning its last World Series in 1979, not appearing in one since then. They also went 20 years without a winning record from 1993 to 2012.
