Tampa Bay Rays Stats & History
The Tampa Bay Rays were founded in 1995, playing their first season as an expansion franchise in 1998. After the manta ray fish, the team was initially named the Devil Rays but was renamed in 2008 to just the Rays. Changing the name was a symbolic change, but it proved to be much more. The year 2008 marked the team’s first winning season and the first time winning their division championship. The team went to its first World Series that year, but fell short. Before 2008, the Rays team stats reflected the team’s struggles, finishing in last place in the divisions every year except in 2004, when they finished second to last. Since 2008, the franchise has done a 180, making six postseason runs and another World Series appearance/loss in 2020.
Due to the franchise still being very young, the Tampa Bay Rays team stats reflect that, without a marquee name leading their record books. Evan Longoria played 10 years with the Rays, leading the franchise in games, and is often seen as the franchise’s most prominent player.
