Colorado Rapids FC Stats & History

The Colorado Rapids were a founding member of the MLS in 1996. Despite fielding a bunch of experienced players, they finished in last place in their first season. In 1997, they finished in fourth place of five teams in the Western Conference. Still, that was good enough for them to make the playoffs.

Colorado beat the MLS odds and pulled off two upsets to emerge as Western Conference champions. They then lost to D.C. United 2-1 in the first MLS Cup final in the Rapids team stats. The next few years didn’t bring much success in the league but Colorado did make a run in the 1999 U.S. Open Cup.

The Rapids advanced to the final where they were favorites over the lower league Rochester Raging Rhinos. Rochester pulled off a 2-0 upset to deny the Rapids their first-ever trophy. The 1999 MLS season was also the first one in which Rapids finished with above a .500 record. In the 2002 season, their highest single-season average attendance was recorded in the Colorado Rapids team stats.

Colorado Rapids FC Team Records

From 2003 to 2005, Colorado Rapids managed three consecutive third-place finishes in the Western Conference. They reached the Conference final in both 2005 and 2006. That was followed by a three-season playoff drought from 2007 to 2009.

Ahead of 2010, Colorado made many exciting signings and crucially extended star striker Conor Casey. The Rapids qualified for the playoffs as a wild card, which meant that they were placed in the Eastern Conference bracket. The Rapids defeated both of their Eastern Conference opponents and advanced to the final vs. FC Dallas.

The Rapids went down 1-0 in the match but Conor Casey leveled the score in the second half. Colorado then scored on a deflected shot in extra time to seal their first-ever MLS Cup championship. Since then, the Rapids have only made one Conference Final appearance. In 2021, though, they managed to secure the best record in the Western Conference.

Colorado has not kept up their form from 2021 and found itself outside of a playoff spot midway through the 2022 season. Some betting advice states that they have a reasonably good chance to make a run in the home stretch, though.
