Minnesota United FC Stats & History

In 2015, MLS commissioner Don Garber announced that Minnesota would receive an expansion franchise. Minnesota United FC began playing in the MLS in 2017 after spending seven seasons in the lower leagues.

They lost their first MLS match 5-1, which was the biggest defeat in an expansion club’s debut in league history. In their first home match, they lost 6-1 to Atlanta United F.C. Unfortunately, they became the first MLS club to concede five or more goals in consecutive matches. Conceding 18 goals in their first four matches was also an unwanted MLS record.

As the season went on, though, the Loons’ performances steadied. They finished ninth in the Western Conference, which was above both Colorado and LA Galaxy. The 2018 seasons didn’t go much better for Minnesota United.

Two key players, Ethan Finlay and Kevin Molino, both went down with season-ending injuries. Minnesota United finished in tenth place in the Western Conference and won just one match on the road. Darwin Quintero, a new signing, led the Minnesota United FC team stats in both goals and assists.

Things turned around for Minnesota United in 2019. They brought in veteran players like Ike Opara, Osvaldo Alonso and Vito Mannone and opened up a new stadium. The Loons made a run to the U.S. Open Cup final but lost 2-1 to Atlanta United.

Minnesota United Team Records

With a fourth-place finish in the Western Conference, Minnesota United made its first playoff appearance. However, they lost in the first round. Two players earned end-of-season awards in the Minnesota United team stats. Ike Opara won MLS Defender of the Year and Vito Mannone won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

The 2020 season was unusual, due to COVID-19, but Minnesota played well. They made the semifinals of the MLS is Back tournament and finished fourth in the West. They got their first-ever playoff win by defeating Colorado Rapids 3-0 at home. They followed it up by defeating Sporting KC, the top team in the West, 3-0. Minutes away from reaching their first MLS Cup final, Minnesota blew a two-goal lead to the Seattle Sounders and lost 3-2.

Minnesota qualified for the playoffs for a third consecutive season in 2021. They lost in the first round to the Portland Timbers, though.

Betting advice identified them as one of the hottest teams in the league, as of late July 2022. With five wins in six matches, they climbed up the table to third place in the West through 22 games. The MLS odds priced them at +3300 to win their first title.
