Real Salt Lake Stats & History

MLS announced Real Salt Lake as one of the first expansion franchises, in 2004. The first Real Salt Lake season was in 2005 and they had a difficult time. The team finished 5-22-5, which corresponded to last place in the Western Conference.

In striker Jeff Cunningham’s only full season with the club, he won the MLS’s Golden Boot in 2006. That same season, Real Salt Lake set a record for the longest winless streak in MLS history, at 18 games.

Real Salt Lake missed out on the playoffs in both 2006 and 2007. With an oddly symmetrical 10-10-10 record, in 2008, they registered their first playoff appearance in the Real Salt Lake team stats. RSL made the Conference Final but fell to the New York Red Bulls, who were the wild card seed.

In their first full season at the soccer-specific Rio Tinto Stadium, Real Salt Lake’s performances improved a lot at home. They set an MLS record with a +23 goal differential in home matches and finished fifth in the Western Conference. Despite having a losing record overall, RSL earned the wild card seed and played in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Real Salt Lake Team Records

Real Salt Lake defeated Columbus Crew 3-2 on aggregate and knocked out the Chicago Fire on penalties to advance to their first MLS Cup final. They found themselves down at halftime to the favored LA Galaxy. However, Robbie Findley equalized in the second half and the match went into extra time and penalties. Robert Russell converted the winning spot kick as they won their first MLS Cup in the RSL team stats.

In the 2010 season, Real Salt Lake didn’t lose a single home match. They also reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions League in their first continental campaign. The home unbeaten run finally ended in 2011, at 29 matches, which was an MLS record at the time. From 2009-2014, Real Salt Lake was one of the best teams in the MLS. They finished second in the Western Conference in 2010, 2012, and 2013. They were also runners-up in the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in the 2012 season. Since 2013, they’ve failed to advance to the Conference Final.

Real Salt Lake was in a position to make their fourth playoff appearance in the last six seasons midway through 2022. They were in fourth place in the West through 22 games, with the MLS odds pricing them at +4000 to win the title. Betting advice suggests being wary of picking them on the road as they won just two of their first 12 road matches.
