Würth 400 - History & Highlights
The Würth 400 started as the Mason-Dixon 300 in 1969 and 1970. Seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty won the first two races. The original track surface was asphalt until it was replaced with concrete in 1995. For much of the track’s history (1971-2020), there were two races at Dover Motor Speedway: one in the spring and one in the fall.
The race was extended to 500 laps starting in 1971 and was subsequently renamed the Mason-Dixon 500. Due to the energy crisis in the mid-1970s, the 1974 edition of the race was shortened to 450 laps. Three-time champion Cale Yarborough took the first of his two wins in the shortened race that year. Yarborough and fellow champions Bobby Allison and David Pearson won a combined seven of the 10 NASCAR races in the 1970s.
Starting in 1984, Anheuser-Busch took over title sponsorship. The race was the Budweiser 500 from 1984 to 1994, the Miller Genuine Draft 500 in 1995, and the Miller 500 from 1996-97. During this time, the Cup Series Race at Dover was the final race win for multiple longtime NASCAR racers. Derrike Cope took the second of his two wins in 1990, Ken Schrader won the last of his four wins in 1991, and Kyle Petty took the final of his eight wins in 1995.
MBNA took over title sponsorship in 1998 when the race was shortened to 400 laps. From then through 2002, the race was called the MBNA Platinum 400. The next year, it was the MBNA Armed Forces Family 400; the 2004 race was the MBNA America 400 “A Salute to Heroes.” The 2005 race was the MBNA RacePoints 400. The title changed to Neighborhood Excellence 400 in 2006 and to Autism Speaks 400 -presented by Visa- in 2007. During this stretch, a different driver won each year: Dale Jarrett (1998), Bobby Labonte (1999), Tony Stewart (2000), Jeff Gordon (2001), Jimmie Johnson (2002), Ryan Newman (2003), Mark Martin (2004), Greg Biffle (2005), Matt Kenseth (2006), Martin Truex Jr. (2007), and Kyle Busch (2008).
Johnson repeated as winner in 2009 in the Autism Speaks 400, presented by Heluva Good! In 2010, the race changed to the Autism Speaks 400 presented by Hershey’s Milk & Milkshakes. Sponsorship changed again in 2011 with the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks, a name kept through 2015.
AAA took over sponsorship in 2016 with the AAA 400 Drive for Autism. It was the Gender RV 400 in 2019 before Drydene took over sponsorship. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 race was part of a twin-race event and was shortened to 311 miles. It was bumped back up to 400 miles in 2021. Chase Elliott won last year’s race, after it was postponed to the next day due to rain.
Johnson has the most wins at the Cup Series Race at Dover, with six. Allison is second, with five.
