NBA Draft 2024
Following is the 2024 NBA Draft first-round order. Scheduled to kick off on Thursday, June 27th in Brooklyn, the second round will follow immediately after.
The draft order is determined by a series of procedures designed to ensure fairness and balance:
- The NBA Finals winner selects last, while the runner-up picks next-to-last in every round, regardless of the regular season record.
- Conference Finals losers choose 27th and 28th, based on the reverse order of their standing.
- Conference Semifinals losers pick 23rd through 26th, following the reverse order of their standing.
- Teams that lost in the first round of the playoffs are assigned 15th through 22nd, according to the reverse order of their standing.
- Teams not making the playoffs occupy the first through 14th positions, determined by the NBA draft lottery. In the lottery, numbered balls are drawn to create 1,001 possible combinations. Teams are assigned combinations based on their performance, with the worst-performing teams having the most combinations and the best chance of getting higher NBA Draft picks.

Understanding the NBA Draft
The NBA Draft is an annual event where NBA teams select eligible players to join their NBA team rosters. This major basketball event is a key focus for fans and bettors, with NBA draft odds becoming a popular betting market.
Selection Process
The NBA Draft consists of two rounds, with the order of selection based on the teams' performance in the previous NBA season. The worst-performing team picks first, while the NBA champion picks last. Teams can trade their draft picks to move up or down in the draft order.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the NBA Draft, players must be at least 19 years old and one year removed from high school. Eligible players typically include college players, international players, and those from other professional leagues who meet the age and education requirements.
History
The NBA Draft began in 1947 and has evolved significantly over the years. Initially, there were no scouting departments, and players were chosen based on limited information. Today, teams invest heavily in scouting and analytics to make informed draft selections.
NBA Teams Strategies
NBA teams use various strategies during the draft to address their needs:
- Best Player Available: Teams select the highest-rated player on their draft board, regardless of position.
- Needs-Based Drafting: Teams prioritize positions where they need more depth or talent.
- Trading Picks: Teams may trade picks to move up and secure a coveted player or trade down to accumulate more picks and add depth to their roster.
Getting Into the NBA Draft Odds
American odds are the most popular format for NBA Draft predictions. You’ll notice a “plus” sign or a “minus” sign before each entry, indicating how much you win for every $100 you bet and how much you need to bet to win $100, respectively.
- Plus numbers (e.g., +150): Indicate a probability lower than 50%. The higher the number, the less likely the event, resulting in a larger payout.
- Minus numbers (e.g., -150): Indicate a probability higher than 50%. The lower the number, the more likely the event, resulting in a smaller payout.
You can also convert American odds to decimal or fractional odds.
Types of NBA Draft Odds
This bet focuses on predicting which team will secure the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft. The draft order is determined by the previous season’s performance, trades, and the results of the draft lottery.
The 14 teams that did not make the NBA playoffs are entered into the lottery, where their odds of winning the first pick are weighted by their records, with the worst team having the highest chance.
Sportsbooks assign odds to each team based on their perceived chances of winning the lottery, factoring in their performance and any trades that might affect their draft position.
This bet involves predicting which player will be selected first overall in the NBA draft. Sportsbooks assign odds to potential top picks based on various factors such as college or international performance, potential impact in the NBA, physical attributes, and the specific needs of the teams with the earliest picks.
The analysis includes scouting reports, expert opinions, and team strategies. Bettors can wager on who they believe will be the first player chosen, taking into account the latest information and trends.
This type of bet predicts the distribution of player positions selected in the NBA draft. Bettors can wager on the likelihood of certain positions being picked more frequently than others.
Sportsbooks assign odds based on factors such as team needs, player rankings, and the overall talent pool available in that draft year. For example, if there are several highly rated guards in a draft class, the odds might reflect a higher likelihood of guards being picked early. Bettors analyze team rosters and draft strategies to make informed bets on the positional distribution.
This bet involves predicting whether a specific player will be picked before (under) or after (over) a certain draft position.
For example, if the Over/Under for a player’s draft position is set at 5.5, and you believe the player will be drafted in the first 5 picks, you would bet the Under. If you think the player will be drafted 6th or later, you would bet the Over.
Sportsbooks set these lines based on player rankings, NBA mock draft, and team needs. Bettors must consider the latest draft rumors, team interests, and player performances to make educated wagers on the draft position of specific players.
NBA Draft Betting Examples
Example 1: Odds to Pick First
Imagine the NBA odds for the team to pick first in the 2024 NBA Draft are as follows:
If you bet $100 on the Detroit Pistons to secure the first overall pick and they win, you would receive $300 (your initial $100 bet plus $200 in winnings).
Example 2: First Player to Be Drafted
The odds for the first player to be drafted are:
- Victor Wembanyama: -150
- Scoot Henderson: +250
- Amen Thompson: +500
If you believe Victor Wembanyama will be the first pick and bet $150, you would win $100 (plus your initial $150 bet) if he is selected first. Conversely, if you think Scoot Henderson will be the first pick and you bet $100, you would win $250 (plus your initial $100 bet) if he is chosen first.
