Team History

The Alcorn State Braves, formerly known as Alcorn A&M, have been playing basketball since the 1940s. They are a part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Braves had one of the best runs in SWAC sports history from 1978-1980. In 1977-1978, the Braves finished with a 22-7 record under head coach Davey Whitney. Unfortunately for the Braves, they didn’t win the SWAC Championship. In 1978-1979, the Braves put up a 28-1 overall record and a 10-0 conference record. They were led by forward Larry Smith, who averaged 17 points per game and nearly 14 rebounds per game. They had five players that averaged double-digit points. The Braves capped off their season by winning the SWAC tournament.

The 1979-1980 season was even better than the one before. The Braves finished with a 28-2 combined record. They went undefeated in conference play and won the SWAC for the second straight season. Smith led the way once again, averaging 20 points per game and 15 rebounds per game. The Braves had six total players that averaged double-digit points. They outscored their opponents by nearly 20 points per game. The Braves received their first NCAA Tournament berth.

The legendary three-year run ended with the Braves compiling a 78-10 combined record and a 22-3 conference record. Coach Whitney and the Braves won the SWAC four more times during the 80s and made three more NCAA Tournament appearances. After an underwhelming 1980-1981 season, the Braves went on to win at least 20 games in their next four seasons.

Head Coach Whitney Is Out

From 1986 to 1998 the Braves put up just one winning season under Whitney. The stretch included the Braves not making a single tournament or winning a single conference championship. The 1998-1999 season was successful for the Braves. They finished with a 23-7 record, won the SWAC and made the tournament again.

The 2001-2002 season ended with the Braves finishing at 21-10 and a 16-2 conference record. Additionally, they won the SWAC and made the tournament. After a 14-19 finish in 2003, Whitney was out as head coach. He finished with a 332-230 combined record, 10 conference championships, and led the Braves to six tournament appearances.

Samuel West coached the Braves from 2003-2008. They didn’t finish with a winning record in any of his five seasons at the helm.

Former Braves star Larry Smith was named head coach in 2008. He stayed at the helm until 2011. He led the Braves to a 12-78 overall record in three seasons.

Luther Riley coached the Braves for the next four seasons compiling a 38-91 overall record.

Montez Robinson got the head coaching job in 2015. The 2016-2017 Braves finished with an 18-14 record but was their first winning record in 15 seasons. He finished his tenure at Alcorn with a 69-86 record before leaving for Tennessee-Martin after the 2019-2020 season.

Landon Bussie became head coach in 2021 and is the current coach at Alcorn State. In his first season, they finished with a 17-17 record. However, they finished 14-4 in conference play and won the SWAC.
