Arizona Wildcats Basketball History
Overall
The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team came to fruition in the 1904-05 season. There has been a significant change in the program since it first began, and it is no longer the same as it once was. Still, like some other major programs around the country, the school has received incredible and major woes. Additionally, the Wildcats have been heavily scrutinized by the NCAA for handling certain situations.
During the early years, as an individual program, coach Orin Albert Kates brought opponents from the local YMCA. The school would go on to win the game by a score of 40-32. The next transitional period would happen under coach Fred Enke, from 1925 to 1961, as part of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the majority.
While leading the charge, Enke was able to accumulate 509 wins during his tenure. Additionally, Enke played in both the NIT and NCAA postseason tournaments in 1950–51 as a leader of the Cats’ first four postseason appearances. This would be the first time the school would be ranked on the national stage. After the conference disbanded, the U of A became part of the Western Athletic Conference. Next up, Bruce Larson, didn’t have a winning record during his tenure, but he had the vision to build a modern basketball venue. The arena would later become the McKale Center.
First African-American Head Coach
When Fred Snowden was hired as Arizona’s basketball coach in 1972, he was the first African-American head coach at a Division I school, as he was dubbed “The Fox”.
In his 10-year tenure as Arizona basketball’s head coach, Fred “The Fox” Snowden was known for his high-octane offense. From 1972 to 1982, Snowden led the Wildcats and punched two tickets to the dance.
Fast-forwarding to the Lute Olson era, things went according to plan as the Wildcats would win their first Pac-10 title in 1986. The program was able to achieve its zenith with its first national title in 1997 against the University of Kentucky Wildcats, as the NCAAB odds were the greatest as the Arizona Wildcats team stats showed.
In 1999, the school faced its first set of sanctions after he stated that he was paid money under the table through his agent. Therefore, the NCAA formally vacated the team’s 1999 NCAA tournament appearance. Terry was also asked to repay $45,363 in forfeited in the 1999 NCAA tournament revenue and banned from the U of A Sports Hall of Fame, However, Terry’s jersey was later retired in 2015.
Despite never visiting the campus, coach Sean Miller accepted the job as head coach of the program in 2009. Things didn’t start great as the school would miss its first NCAA Tournament in 25 years during the 2009-10 campaign.
Assistant Coach Charged With Bribery
Miller would have a few successful runs during his tenure, but investigations by the NCAA would mar his legacy. Miller was about to begin his ninth season at Arizona when federal prosecutors charged assistant coach Emanuel “Book” Richardson with bribery, soliciting a bribe, and wire fraud as part of an extensive college basketball scandal on September 26, 2017.
Other charges indicated that Miller paid the former number-one overall pick of the 2018 NBA DeAndre Ayton, $10,000, to attend Arizona. Miller has constantly denied the allegations during the last few years of his tenure.
Despite the ups and downs of his coaching career, Miller finished 302–109, winning five Pac-12 titles, three conference tournament championships, and seven NCAA appearances. He is the third most successful coach in school history with 302 victories.
Tommy Lloyd controls the reins in Arizona and has solid NCAAB odds to move the program in a more positive direction. Arizona dominated Nicholls 117-75 in their season opener, scoring its most points in a game since 1998 and tied for ninth in school history. The Wildcats also shot 71.7 percent from the field, which is a school record.
