Arkansas Razorbacks Basketball History

The Arkansas Razorbacks Standings is a Division I program based in Fayetteville, Ark. Arkansas currently competes in the Southeastern Conference and is coached by Eric Musselman.

Arkansas has a rich history, owning the most wins of any SEC men’s basketball program besides Kentucky. The Razorbacks also have one of the 25 best-win percentages of all time.

Arkansas reached new heights when it won the NCAA title in 1994. Four years after making their first Final Four, the Razorbacks went 31-3 under Nolan Richardson and beat No. 2 seed Duke 76-72 in the national championship game. Corliss Williamson paced the top-seeded Razorbacks with a game-high 23 points and was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

In 1995, Arkansas won 32 games but fell a step short of defending its title, losing the national championship game to UCLA, 89-78. And the following season, in their ninth straight tournament appearance, the Razorbacks reached the Sweet 16.

Overall, Arkansas has been to the NCAA Tournament 34 times, with a combined record of 48-34. The Razorbacks have been to 13 Sweet 16s, 11 Elite Eights, and six Final Fours. The most recent tournament appearance came in 2022 under Musselman, when they went 28-9, including 13-5 in SEC play, and upset No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga 74-68 in the Sweet 16. On the doorstep of a long-awaited return to the Final Four, the Razorbacks dropped the regional final to second-seeded Duke, 78-69. It marked the second straight year Arkansas lost in the Elite Eight.

Glen Rose, the second-winningest coach in school history, led Arkansas to its first Final Four in 1941. Eugene Lambert brought the Razorbacks back in 1945, and they also made it in 1978 under Eddie Sutton. The 1978 team, led by future Hall of Famer Sidney Moncrief, topped the Associated Press poll for the first time and won a then-school record 32 games. Since then, only four other Razorback teams (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995) have hit the 30-win mark.

Arkansas was part of the first wave of SEC expansion, joining the league in 1991 along with South Carolina. Before that, Arkansas competed in the Southwest Conference. The SEC then added Missouri and Texas A&M in 2012. Oklahoma and Texas are slated to join in 2024.

Since becoming a member, Arkansas has combined to win three conference titles. Its most recent came in 2000 when it captured the SEC Tournament title against long odds. The Razorbacks had a losing record in conference play during the regular season but won four straight games to steal a ticket to the Big Dance. The Razorbacks wound up losing in the first round to sixth-seeded Miami, ending their season at 19-15.

The Razorbacks have also made the National Invitational Tournament four times, most recently in 2019.

Notably, Arkansas has put more than three NCAAB dozen players in the NBA, including former All-Stars Joe Johnson and Alvin Robertson, as well as Patrick Beverley, Daniel Gafford, Isaiah Joe, Moses Moody, Bobby Portis, and Jaylin Williams.
