Auburn Tigers Basketball History
Beginning
The Auburn Tigers are a Division I program based in Auburn, Ala. Auburn, a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932, is coached by Bruce Pearl.
Auburn has been to the NCAA Tournament 11 times, including in 2019 when it reached the Final Four. After earning an automatic bid to the Big Dance thanks to their SEC Tournament championship, the fifth-seeded Tigers overcame the college basketball odds to beat New Mexico State, Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky. Those victories propelled them into a national semifinal showdown with Virginia, which the top-seeded Cavaliers won 63-62. Led by Pearl, the Tigers finished the season with a program-record 30 victories.
Before that, Auburn’s deepest NCAA Tournament run came in 1986. The Tigers, making their third of five consecutive trips to the tournament under coach Sonny Smith, went 22-11 and made an unlikely run to the Elite Eight as a No. 8 seed. After topping ninth-seeded Arizona in the first round, the Tigers upset a pair of higher seeds — No. 1 St. John’s and No. 4 UNLV — to reach the regional final, where they lost 84-76 to No. 2 Louisville.
The Tigers returned to the tournament in both 1987 and 1988, before going 10 years without an appearance. During that time, Auburn did make four trips to the National Invitational Tournament (1993, 1995, 1996, 1998), albeit without much success.
A Milestone Season for Auburn
In many ways, 1999 was a milestone season for Auburn. Led by Cliff Ellis, the Tigers won a then-program-record 29 games and captured their first SEC regular season championship in 39 years. Although they fell short in the conference tournament, losing to Kentucky in the semifinals, the top-seeded Tigers rebounded to make the Sweet 16. That’s where they fell 72-64 to No. 4 Ohio State.
With a great Auburn Tigers standings in the 2023, they returned to the Sweet 16 but then went another 15 years before its next appearance in college basketball’s marquee postseason event. The Tigers lost in the second round in 2018 on the heels of an SEC title, just as they did in 2022.
The 2022 team featured SEC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-American Jabari Smith, who averaged 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game in his lone season of college. The Houston Rockets selected Smith third overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, making him the highest draft pick in school history. Altogether, Auburn has had nearly three dozen players drafted, including Hall of Famer Charles Barkley (fifth overall in 1984).
Barkley received numerous awards during his three seasons with Auburn, including SEC Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, and is still the school record-holder for career field goal percentage (.626). He helped lead Auburn to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984.
Barkley’s No. 34 is retired by the school, along with the numbers of Wesley Person, John Mengelt, Mike Mitchell, Rex Frederick, and Chuck Person.
