The Austin Peay Governors Basketball History
The Austin Peay Governors began to play in the 1929-30 season under coach Halbert Harvill.
The 1939-40 team went 19-0 and the Governors had the typical ups and downs that follow the majority of college basketball teams. By the time the late 1950s rolled around, Austin Peay had a pretty solid team. The Governors qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1963.
Austin Peay made the jump to Division I for the 1963-64 season as member of the Ohio Valley Conference. It took a bit of time but Austin Peay won the IVC title in 1972-73, sending the team to its first NCAA Division I Tournament, although the appearance was later vacated by the NCAA. Austin Peay returned to the Tournament the following season.
There was a bit of a lapse between tournament appearances for Austin Peay, which won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in 1987, earning another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The Governors defeated Illinois in the first round but lost to Providence in overtime in the next game. Austin Peay returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and again in 2003.
The Governors had a pair of NIT appearances in 2004 and 2007 before returning to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Austin Peay had a CIT appearance in 2009 and played in the CBI in 2011.
The Governors had their most recent NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016 and the team’s last postseason appearance was in the 2018 CIT. The Governors moved to the ASUN for the 2022-23 NCAAB season.
