Binghamton Bearcats Basketball History

Binghamton College was founded in 1946 and its athletic teams were originally known as the Colonials. The basketball team operated as a Division III program until a short stint in Division II and then elevation to Division I in 2001.

The Bearcats made a quick rise to respectability in the America East, finishing above .500 in league play in three of their first five seasons. They put it all together on the court in 2008-09, going 13-3 in conference action and winning the AE tournament to gain entry into the NCAA Tournament. The historic campaign led to a contract extension for Kevin Broadus, who was named America East Coach of the Year. However, concerns over the team’s tactics in building a winner were called into question and soon blew into a massive scandal that rocked the program.

Recruiting, Academic and Criminal Transgressions

D.J. Rivera, who tied for the league lead in scoring that season at 20.0 points per game, was one of several players kicked off the team following recruiting, academic and criminal transgressions that ran the gamut. Many of the allegations came out shortly after a loss to 2nd-seeded Duke in the NCAA Tournament, as a state audit revealed a wide range of issues. In addition to the jettisoning of several players, head coach Kevin Broadus was repositioned and later left the school in the wake of a lawsuit against the administration.

The 2009-10 team began to play with just seven players and an interim coach in former Temple star Mark Macon. Despite tough NCAAB odds, the Bearcats stayed competitive that year with an 8-8 mark in the America East, but it’s been unable to establish a winning culture since.

The 2021-22 team, under first-year head coach Levell Sanders, went 12-17, the program’s best winning percentage in 12 years. Its eight AEC victories were the most since Macon’s skeleton crew eked out eight wins in 2009-10, and the Bearcats reached the semifinals of the AEC tournament last spring.
