Boston College Eagles Basketball History
They’ve been playing basketball in Chestnut Hill continuously since the end of World War II, although the first 30-plus seasons saw the Eagles exist as an independent team with little fanfare.
There was an NCAA Tournament berth in 1958 and then back-to-back entries in the 1960s under Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy, who coached the team to within a game of the Final Four in 1967.
The program fell on hard times in the latter half of the 1970s, as several members of the 1978-79 team were accused of being involved in a point-shaving operation. The embarrassing episode – which involved renowned Mafia associate Henry Hill, later profiled in Goodfellas – brought national shame on the Eagles and caused one player to even do jail time.
With entry to the Big East in 1979, Boston College’s profile made a massive turnaround and a big leap into national prominence, which was only enhanced by tournament berths in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1985. The 1982 edition pulled off multiple upsets in the tourney en route to an Elite Eight berth.
Second-Round Upset
Perhaps no victory in program history is more memorable than the second-round upset of top-seeded and defending champion North Carolina in 1994, a game that defied NCAAB odds and led to the iconic Sports Illustrated cover featuring a fist-waving Bill Curley and the words, “Take That, Tar Heels.”
There were two more NCAA Tournament berths – and first-round wins – under then-coach Jim O’Brien before he left to join the Celtics’ staff in 1997. Enter Al Skinner, a former UMass star as a player and three-time 20-game winner as a coach at Rhode Island.
Skinner went 32-56 in his first three seasons at BC before authoring the best run in program history. Utilizing quality recruits such as Troy Bell, Craig Smith, Jared Dudley, Sean Marshall and Sean Williams, Skinner’s Eagles made the NCAA Tournament in seven of the next nine years. There were Big East regular-season titles in 2001, 2003 and 2005, and a conference tournament crown in 2001.
The program jumped to its current home, the ACC, for the 2005-06 season, the same year it produced a school-record 28 wins and reached the Sweet 16 before a one-point loss to No. 1 seed Villanova.
There were two more tourney berths under Skinner in 2007 and 2009 before he was shown the door in a still-controversial move that jettisoned the winningest coach in program history. The team hasn’t returned to the Big Dance since, producing just two winning records since 2010.
Under first-year head coach Earl Grant in 2021-22, the Eagles opened ACC play with a win over Notre Dame but were 7-17 thereafter. They did win two games in the conference tournament before bowing out with an overtime loss to Miami. The Boston College Eagles standings has showed a team that struggled from the perimeter, as it finished last in the 15-team ACC in 3-point shooting in conference play (28.4%).
