Team History

The Charlotte 49ers are a Division I program based in North Carolina. Charlotte returned to Conference USA in 2013 after leaving eight years earlier to join the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Charlotte has made 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, with one trip to the Final Four. In 1977, their first year in the Sun Belt, the 49ers swept the regular season and conference tournament titles under Lee Rose, and reeled off wins over Central Michigan, Syracuse and Michigan to advance to the national semifinals. While they wound up losing to Marquette, 51-49, the 49ers finished the year with a program-record 28 victories.

The 49ers’ next NCAA Tournament win didn’t come until 20 years later, when they beat Georgetown but lost in the second round to Utah. They also scored first-round victories in 1998, 1999 and 2001.

Winning 2 Conference Tourneys

Charlotte experienced its share of success during its first stint in C-USA (1995-05,) winning two conference tournaments and the 2004 regular season title. The 49ers made the NCAA Tournament seven times during that stretch and also appeared once in the National Invitational Tournament. The 49ers have been to the NIT seven times, including a runner-up finish in 1976.

Charlotte has been mediocre at best since rejoining C-USA, with just three winning seasons — and zero trips to the postseason — over the last nine years. The 49ers have had three different head coaches during that time, from Alan Major to four-time NBA All-Star Mark Price to Ron Sanchez. Major’s predecessor, Bobby Lutz, is the winningest coach in program history, with 218 victories from 1999 to 2010.

Sanchez, a former assistant at Indiana, Washington State and Virginia, entered his fifth season at the helm in 2022-23. The 49ers faced long odds, as they were ranked ninth in the C-USA preseason poll.
