Clemson Tigers Basketball History
An ACC doormat for much of the conference’s early history, Clemson began to gain respectability in the mid-1970s under head coach Bill Foster, posting its first 20-win season in 1976-77, when it went 22-6 behind future NBA center Tree Rollins.
That was the ninth straight season in which the Tigers had an improved winning percentage. While that trend was impossible to keep up, the 1979-80 team went 23-9 and defeated No. 1 Duke in a memorable overtime clash. Led by future NBA star Larry Nance, that Clemson team raced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, still its best run in program history, before falling to UCLA.
There were three more tournament berths under head coach Cliff Ellis, including one on the heels of the team’s lone ACC regular-season title in 1989-90. That was one of the highest-scoring teams in program history, as the Clemson Tigers team stats showed an average of 79.3 points per game.
Unfortunately, the Tigers’ run that season was cut short by one of the more notable buzzer-beaters in Big Dance history. Up by a point with exactly one second left, Clemson allowed UConn to throw a full-court heave to Tate George, who hit a turnaround at the horn to end the Tigers’ season.
Coach Barnes and the Three Tourneys
Under Rick Barnes, the former Providence and future Texas and Tennessee head coach, the Tigers went to the tournament three straight times in the 1990s. The 1996-97 team opened 16-1 and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation in the Associated Press poll, but it fell in the Sweet 16 in a double-overtime thriller against Minnesota.
Barnes left after the 1997-98 season and the program endured nine consecutive seasons without a tourney berth, finishing under .500 in ACC play each time. The Tigers would eventually find their way back to the NCAA Tournament, but between 1998 and 2010, it went 0-4 in the annual event, losing all four times in upset fashion to a lower-seeded team.
Brad Brownell, the program’s winningest coach, took over in 2010. His teams have finished .500 or better in ACC play in seven of his 12 seasons at the helm and the 2017-18 edition tied the program record with 25 victories. That season ended in the Sweet 16 with a narrow loss to top-seeded Kansas. The Tigers haven’t won a tournament game since.
The 2021-22 team scored a big win at Virginia early in ACC play before falling to the Cavaliers at home in the very next game. That loss kicked off a 3-11 swoon. The Tigers won their last four games of the regular season and their first contest in the ACC tournament to get over .500, but the campaign ended in overtime against Virginia Tech.
The NCAAB odds were smiling on the Tigers early on, but they were only a fringe bubble team as March approached and were left out of the tournament for the eighth time in the last 10 completed seasons.
