Davidson Wildcats Basketball History

The Davidson Wildcats are a Division I program based in North Carolina. Davidson currently competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference and is the alma mater of two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry.

In three seasons with Curry from 2006-09, Davidson posted an 85-20 record (.809) and made two trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats won the Southern Conference title every year he was on campus, as Curry set school records for career points (2,635), 3-point field goals (414), 3-point percentage (.412) and steals per game (2.1).

Davidson’s 2008 Elite Eight run — its first in 39 years and third all-time — is when Curry really put himself and his school on the map. He exploded for 40 points in a first-round victory over Gonzaga, 30 against Georgetown, 33 against Wisconsin and 25 in a 59-57 loss to eventual national champion Kansas. Curry’s 32 points per game were a tournament record, as were his 23 3-pointers.

Curry Opts for NBA Draft

Curry returned his junior season and led the nation in scoring (28.6) while collecting All-American honors from the Associated Press. Despite winning 27 games, including their third consecutive conference title, the Wildcats did not receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. Instead, they were invited to the National Invitational Tournament, and lost in the second round to St. Mary’s. Curry opted for the NBA Draft following the season and was selected seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors.

Davidson returned to the tournament in 2012 and 2013 out of the Southern Conference, and in 2015 after jumping to the A-10. The Wildcats have lost five straight first-round games since Curry left.

Legendary coach Bob McKillop retired following the 2021-22 season, ending a 33-year run highlighted by 634 wins and 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. His 230 Southern Conference victories were more than any coach in league history. He was succeeded by his son, Matt. The Wildcats entered this season with modest NCAAB odds of making it back to the postseason, as they were picked sixth in the A-10 preseason poll.

Altogether, Davidson has been to the NCAA Tournament 15 times, with a combined record of 8-16. It’s also made nine appearances in the NIT.

Davidson Wildcats NCAAB FAQs

When did Central Arkansas become known as the Bears?

Before it was the University of Central Arkansas, the school was primarily a school for teachers. As a result, many of the early nicknames had to do with teaching. According to UCA, “prior to being known as the Bears, University of Central Arkansas students and teams were known as many things – tutors, teachers and even pedagogues.” In 1920, inspired by a student’s class ring design that featured a bear, what was then the Arkansas State Normal School adopted the bear as the school mascot.

How many players have been drafted out of Central Arkansas?

Despite having a program for more than 100 years, the Bears have had just one player drafted. Scottie Pippen was taken by the Seattle SuperSonics with the fifth pick in the 1987 draft. Pippen was traded to the Bulls for Olden Polynice (yes, really) on draft day and the rest is history.

How many UCA school records do Scottie Pippen have?

Because college basketball seasons were a bit shorter back in the 1980s and Pippen missed part of his freshman year, Central Arkansas’ greatest player holds fewer school records than one may think. For single-game school records, Pippen is one of five Bears to have notched seven steals in a game. For single-season records, Pippen’s 78 steals and 3.1 steals per game average are both UCA records. He holds no school career records.
