Team History
Delaware State’s basketball team began play in the 1958-59 season, playing as an independent until joining the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the 1969-70 season. The Hornets’ foray into the CIAA was short-lived, however, as the school was one of the original MEAC teams for the 1971-72 season. When the NCAA elevated the MEAC to Division I status for the 1980-81 season, the Hornets became a Division I team.
Delaware State struggled throughout the 1980s and 1990s, posting just one winning record. Greg Jackson became coach in 2000-01 and the team’s fortunes changed a bit. The Hornets had back-to-back winning records in 2001-02 and 2002-03 and won the MEAC conference tournament in 2005, sending them to their only NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hornets didn’t embarrass themselves, losing 57-46 to No. 1 seed Duke.
Delaware State won 21 NCAAB games in each of the next two seasons but couldn’t win the conference tournament, so the Hornets settled for NIT appearances in 2006 and 2007. The Hornets didn’t return to the postseason again until the 2014-15 season when they went 18-17 and were invited to play in the CBI. That was Delaware State’s last season where it didn’t have a losing record, with the Hornets going just 38-168 between the 2015-16 and 2021-22 seasons.
