DePaul Blue Demons Basketball History
Overall
While there were some notable early teams in DePaul’s men’s basketball history, particularly the 17-0 squad in 1933-34, the program truly took shape once Ray Meyer became its head coach in 1942.
A Chicago native, Meyer made himself into a Windy City institution during his 42 years at the helm. His very first team went to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament and his third, in 1945, won the NIT, with future Hall of Famer George Mikan manning the middle.
The Blue Demons made it to a postseason event nine more times through the 1940s, 50s and 60s before some lean years in the early portion of the 1970s. In fact, in six seasons between 1969-70 and 1974-75, Meyer’s teams were just six games over .500 overall.
The 1975-76 team, with future NBA center Dave Corzine underneath, secured the team’s first NCAA Tournament berth in 11 years and knocked off Virginia in the first round. This unit, which finished 20-9, laid the foundation for the best years the program has ever seen, by a long shot.
A Pair of NCAA Tournament Victories
Corzine averaged 21.0 points and 11.3 rebounds in his senior year, leading the team to a 27-3 record, which included a huge win at fourth-ranked Notre Dame, and a pair of NCAA Tournament victories.
The ride ended when the Fighting Irish got their revenge in the Elite Eight with a victory over a fatigued DePaul unit that had needed double-overtime to get past Louisville two nights earlier.
Corzine left for the NBA but the team didn’t miss a beat the following season, as superstar freshman Mark Aguirre and future Denver Nugget (and brother of Whitney Houston) Gary Garland paced perhaps the best team in program history.
Aguirre averaged 24.0 points and both Garland and Curtis Watkins poured in 17.0 per game for a team that regularly ran it up on opponents. DePaul Blue Demons team stats displayed an 82.5 point per game scoring average.
Final Four: First Time Since Meyer
One of the better offensive efforts came in a stunning 95-91 win over second-ranked and top-seeded UCLA that put the Blue Demons into the Final Four for the first time since Meyer’s first season in 1943.
Unfortunately, the next opponent was Indiana State, which had a guy named Larry Bird on its side. He had 35 points and 16 rebounds as the Sycamores outlasted DePaul by two points to end the magical run.
Meyer’s teams would gain a No. 1 seed with incredible NCAAB odds the following season and again in 1980-81, but both trips to the Big Dance resulted in shocking first-round defeats. Those were disappointing results for a team loaded up with Aguirre and fellow future NBA star Terry Cummings, but Meyer restocked the shelves and was a No. 1 seed again in the 1984 NCAA Tournament, this time falling in the second round to Wake Forest.
That loss to the Demon Deacons was Meyer’s last, as he turned the reins over to son and longtime assistant Joey, who couldn’t quite match his father’s run of success. Joey Meyer did have NCAA Tournament berths in each of his first five seasons, but four were later vacated due to indiscretions, and the program soon fell on hard times.
When Joey Meyer’s tenure ended in 1996-97, the Blue Demons were 3-23, winning just one game in their new league, the Conference USA. The program has had just two NCAA Tournament trips, four visits to the NIT, and one to the College Basketball Invitational in the last 30 seasons.
An entry into the Big East before the 2005-06 seemed to raise the program’s profile, but it has endured 15 straight losing seasons in conference play. Tony Stubblefield took over as head coach for the 2021-22 campaign and had the team sitting at 9-1 before the rigors of the Big East took hold and the Blue Demons finished 15-16.
Early betting sheets have DePaul, which had a host of seniors on Stubblefield’s first team, finishing again in the second half of the Big East.
