Overview of the Eastern Washington Standings

Last-Season Standings

The Eastern Washington Eagles had a solid 2021-2022 season, finishing with a 21-12 overall record and a 14-6 record in the Big Sky Conference. The team was led by head coach Shantay Legans, who was in his fifth season at the helm.

The Eagles started the season strong, winning their first four games including a dominant 97-56 victory over Carroll College. However, they faced a tough non-conference schedule, including losses to ranked teams like Gonzaga and Colorado.

As the season progressed, the Eagles found their rhythm and began to rack up wins in conference play. They had impressive wins over Montana State and Weber State and swept both Northern Arizona and Idaho State in their season series.

The Eagles were led by a talented trio of guards in Michael Meadows, Kim Aiken Jr., and Tyler Robertson. Aiken Jr. was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points per game, while Meadows was the team’s top distributor, averaging 4.2 assists per game. Robertson was a versatile threat, averaging 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

The Eagles also had a solid frontcourt, led by Tanner Groves and Kim Aiken Sr. Groves, a 6’9″ forward, was a force in the paint, averaging 11.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Aiken Sr. was a key contributor on both ends of the floor, averaging 7.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

Overall, the Eagles had a successful season and finished in second place in the Big Sky Conference standings, just behind Montana State. They earned a spot in the College Basketball Invitational, where they fell to the New Mexico State Aggies in the first round.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will aim to build on their success in the 2022-2023 season, with several key players returning to the roster. With their talented guards and solid frontcourt, the Eagles will be a team to watch in the Big Sky Conference.

Eastern Washington Eagles Basketball History

The Eastern Washington Eagles have a losing record overall of 506-635, and we have seen improvements over the last few years.

The Eagles team stats show that they have made the NCAA Tournament only three times, but the most recent appearance was in 2021 when losing in the first round to Kansas 93-84.

It was a much-improved year having not made the tournament since 2015, where they lost in the second round to Georgetown.

They had a lot of success under coach Stantay Legans from 2017-2021, before being replaced last season by David Riley. Legans went 75-49 during his tenure before Riley went 13-12.
Legans was the most successful coach since Bob Brumblay went 75-17 in the ’40s.

Despite having a winning record overall, they have a losing Big Sky Conference record of 212-264. They haven’t had as much success in the Big Sky compared to when they were independent.

NCAAB odds typically have them at short odds against Big Sky opposition, and despite an 18-16 record last season, they went 39-16 in two years prior, so they were one of the conference heavyweights.

The most dominant player in the school’s history was Bogdan Bliznyuk, who leads the Eagles in points, field goals, games, and three throws. The Ukrainian won the 2018 Big Sky Player of the Year award before being signed by an Israeli Premier League team.

Tyler Harvey is another recent player who has done well offshore. The American went to Australia and is a key fixture for the Illawarra Hawks, so the Eastern Washington Eagles team stats bode well for their alumni. Harvey was the third player to be selected for the NBA Draft when going to the Orlando Magic. Ron Cox (Cavaliers) and Rodney Stuckey (Pistons) came before him.

The Eagles are 0-3 in the NCAA Tournament following losses to Kansas, Georgetown, and Oklahoma State. They have never been seeded better than 13th and their closest margin was a nine-point loss to Kansas.

Eastern Washington Eagles Basketball FAQs

What is the highest win total in program history?

The Eastern Washington Eagles went 26-9 in 2014-15. It was good enough to make the NCAA Tournament before losing to Georgetown by 10 points. It was an excellent season for the Eagles, having gone 30 years without scoring 20 or more wins.

What was the worst season in program history?

The 1995-96 season is best forgotten by Eastern Washington fans. It scored three wins and 23 losses. It was a terrible period for the Eagles, scoring just 33 wins in a six-season span.

Who is the greatest player in program history?

It’s a tough call to make because Bogdan Bliznyuk was so good, but Rodney Stuckey was a first-round NBA Draft pick. He spent seven years with the Detroit Pistons before heading to the Indiana Pacers for three years until his professional career ended in 2017. He made the NBA playoffs three times, including Detroit’s run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2008.
