Team History

The Fairfield Stags first began in the 1948-49 season and enjoyed success in their early years as an NAIA team, playing in the NAIA Basketball Tournament in the 1950-51 season. The Stags moved up to Division II and played in the Tri-State Conference between 1956-57 thru 1963-64. The Stags won three straight conference championships between 1960-1962, which put them in the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament each season.

The Stags earned their first berth to the NCAA Tournament in 1986, winning the conference tournament after turning in a 13-1 conference record. The Stags weren’t quite as good the following season, going 5-9 in conference play but managed to return to the Big Dance by winning the conference tournament.

The Stags pulled off one of the more improbable conference tournament titles in 1997, winning the conference tournament after finishing 2-12 in conference play during the season. It was the last NCAA Tournament appearance for the Stags, who played in the NIT in 1996, 2003 and 2011. Fairfield played in the CIT in 2012, 2013 and 2016,

FAQs

Have Any Fairfield Players Made the NBA?

The Stags have had two players who spent time in the NBA, although neither was drafted. A.J. Wynder played in six games for the Boston Celtics in the 1990-91 season and Deng Gai got into two games for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2005-06 season. Gai is the career Fairfield team stats leader in blocks with 432, more than twice as many as second-place Ryan Olander (206.)

Why Is Fairfield’s Nickname the Stags?

When Fairfield began varsity sports, the university left it up to the students to decide upon a team nickname. The two names submitted to the university’s Board of Trustees were the Stags and the Chanticleers. The board elected to go with Stags.

Has Fairfield Had Any Players Drafted by the NBA?

While Fairfield’s two players to play in an NBA regular season game were both undrafted, the Stags have had 11 players drafted by NBA teams, although none ever played a meaningful game. Many of the players were taken in the 1960s and early 1970s when the draft was at least 10 rounds. Still, Mark Young and Joe DeSantis were taken in the second round of the 1979 draft and failed to make their respective teams. The last Fairfield player drafted was Pete DeBisschop in the fourth round of the 1983 draft.
