Florida State Seminoles Basketball History

The Seminoles have largely toiled beneath the football program in Tallahassee, but they’ve made their mark from time to time. The 1971-72 squad put the program on the map with a Cinderella push to the national title game before a loss to Bill Walton’s UCLA squad.

That run came under head coach Hugh Durham, who would later take Georgia to the Final Four. Durham led the Seminoles to a 21-win season in 1975-76 in the program’s last campaign as an independent. It joined the fledgling Metro the following season, winning the conference in 1977-78.

That team made it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1972 finals, but it fell to eventual champion Kentucky in what would be Durham’s last game with the team.

There would be some mediocre years under Joe Williams before Pat Kennedy took over for the 1986-87 season and quickly turned Florida State into a regular NCAA Tournament squad. The Seminoles would visit the Big Dance five times in six years between 1988 and 1993, even stealing some of the football program’s thunder by utilizing quarterback Charlie Ward as one of its key players in a 1993 Elite Eight run.

That team, with other star guards Sam Cassell and Bob Sura, was as complete a squad as the program has seen. Florida State Seminoles team stats that year saw a collection of talent that produced 86.3 points per game and ranked fifth nationally with 6.0 blocks per contest.

Cassell Leaves for the NBA

Cassell moved on to the NBA and there would be some lean years for Florida State, which suffered through 12 straight below-.500 finishes in the ACC. The 2005-06 team, head coach Leonard Hamilton’s fourth with the program, ended that stretch with a 9-7 mark in league play, but it wasn’t until 2008-09 that Hamilton was able to snap a 10-year hiatus from the NCAA Tournament.

Led by Toney Douglas, that team won 25 games and was a No. 5 seed in the tourney. It was the first of eight tournament berths in the next 13 years under Hamilton, who may have had his best team of all time when COVID cut short the 2019-20 season.

Behind four eventual NBA players, the Seminoles were ranked fourth nationally when that season ended, with great NCAAB odds to make a quality postseason run.

A six-game losing streak in the middle of the ACC schedule hurt the cause in 2021-22, leaving the team on the bubble, which popped following a first-round loss to Syracuse in the ACC tourney.

Florida State Seminoles NCAAB FAQs

What is the highest win total in program history?

The Seminoles went 29-8 in 2018-19 before a Sweet 16 loss to top-seeded Gonzaga.

What was the worst season in program history?

In 2000-01, Florida State was 9-21 and finished 4-12 in the ACC under head coach Steve Robinson. It suffered early-season losses to Furman and Cleveland State and opened 0-6 in the ACC.
Robinson lasted one more season before Hamilton took over.

Who is the greatest player in program history?

With apologies to early standout Dave Fedor, eventual Boston Celtics legend Dave Cowens and Sam Cassell, who was with the program for only two years, the nod in this one goes to Bob Sura.
A solid NBAer for 10 seasons, Sura finished up at Florida State as the program’s leader in points, minutes, field goals and free throws and he ranks second in 3-pointers, fourth in steals and sixth in assists. He was the leading scorer as a sophomore on the team that reached the 1993 Elite Eight.
