Furman Paladins Basketball History

Overall

The Furman Paladins began play in the 1919-20 season, playing a 14-game schedule as an independent. Furman went just 2-12 in its first year and joined the Southern Conference for the 1920-21 season. The Southern Conference had a different look in those days, with teams like Kentucky, Georgia, and Clemson. Not surprisingly, Furman went 1-12 and returned to the independent ranks.

The Paladins gave the Southern Conference another shot for the 1936-37 season and have remained in the conference ever since. The Paladins had a nice run between the 1951-52 and 1954-55 seasons, going 76-30, but were unable to get into the postseason despite having two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year Frank Selvy on the squad.

Furman broke through in the 1970s, winning six conference tournaments, which gave them six berths in the NCAA Tournament. The Paladins were just 1-7 in those games, but seldom embarrassed themselves, as three of those losses were by three points or less.

Furman has appeared in the CIT on three occasions, the last time being in 2017 when it reached the semifinals. The Paladins have appeared in the NIT twice, losing both games, with the last appearance in 2019.
