Gardner-Webb Basketball History

Gardner-Webb began play in 1964-65 as a junior college and the school finally was granted accreditation as a four-year school in 1971. The basketball team had plenty of success early on and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in 1968 and 1969. The 1969-70 season was the team’s first as a four-year school.

Gardner-Webb shared the regular season title in 2005 but joined the Big South for the 2008-09 season.

Gardner-Webb struggled at the beginning in the Big South, posting losing records in each of its first four seasons. But in 2012-13 Chris Holtmann led the team to a 21-12 record and a berth in the CIT.

A 20-14 mark in 2014-15 earned Gardner-Webb a CBI invitation and in 2018-19 the team was able to win the Big South Conference tournament and earn its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
